While at The Pittsburgh Dispatch, Nellie wrote a series of articles about women who worked in local factories entitled "Our Workshop Girls." These articles demonstrated that women could do the same jobs as men, and just as well. Nellie also wanted to show that women were willing to work at jobs outside of the home. She hoped that owners in other industries would follow the lead of businesses profiled.
